I am very blessed to have met and connected with Joan M. Von Feldt,MD, MSEd (FACR, FACP). She is a Rheumatologist as well as a “Lupologist.” Her knowledge is great and she is an amazing educator.
Dr. Von Feldt is a professor of medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and is recently retired after 30 years of service to Penn. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut and her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. She completed her fellowship in rheumatology and also received a masters of science in education from the University of Pennsylvania.
She is a clinician with recognized regional and national expertise in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(SLE) and Rheumatoid Arthritis and had an active clinical research focus. Additional areas of research in medical education included cognitive bias and diagnostic error. She has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles, editorials and book chapters. She is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology and has served as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous other publications.
Dr. Von Feldt is past president of the American College of Rheumatology (2015-2016). She served on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) as well as the ABIM Council and was Chair of the ABIM Subspecialty Board on Rheumatology from 2010-2014. She was secretary general of the International League of Associations of Rheumatology (ILAR) from 2005-2007 and treasurer of the Pan American League of Associations of Rheumatology (PANLAR) from 2010-2014.
She has devoted significant time to educational activities at the Perelman School of Medicine and was a senior member of the curriculum committee, and served as course director for undergraduate medical course, Introduction to Clinical Reasoning, a pre-clerkship course for medical students (2007-2016)
Dr. Von Feldt has been recognized by Best Doctors in Americaand Philadelphia Magazine.
She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and especially her grandchildren. She enjoys cooking, swimming, yoga, and ballroom dance.
